Grandpa's
Shingle Mill

Hand-cut Maine cedar shingles โ€” made by hand, the same way they've been made for two generations. Built to last on the Bold Coast and beyond.

๐Ÿชต Hand Cut Maine Cedar 2nd Generation Whiting, Maine
The Story

Two generations.
One mill. Every bundle by hand.

Philip Gardner is the second generation to run the cedar shingle mill his father once operated in Whiting, Maine. The name says it all โ€” this is a family business in the truest sense, and the craft has been passed down the way it always was: by doing the work together, season after season, until you know it in your hands.

Today Philip still does all the work himself, with the occasional help from one of his grandsons โ€” time he openly cherishes as they learn the trade and keep the legacy alive. There are no shortcuts here. Every bundle is hand-cut, carefully inspected, and made with the same pride and attention to detail that the mill was built on decades ago.

In a world of mass-produced building materials, what Philip makes is genuinely rare: a handmade product from a man who has spent a lifetime perfecting it, in a place where that kind of work still exists. If you're building or restoring on the Bold Coast โ€” or anywhere in Maine โ€” this is where you call first.

Hand cut
Every single bundle. No shortcuts, no mass production. The same process that's been used since the mill started.

Maine Atlantic white cedar โ€” naturally resistant to rot, insects, and the harsh Downeast climate. Built for this coast.
Why cedar shingles are the
right choice for Maine.
๐ŸŒง๏ธ
Built for the Maine Climate
Maine cedar is naturally resistant to moisture, rot, and insects โ€” essential on the Bold Coast where weather is constant and unforgiving. Cedar shingles breathe, expanding and contracting with the seasons without cracking.
โณ
Lasts Decades
A properly installed cedar shingle roof or siding can last 30โ€“50 years. The upfront investment pays for itself many times over compared to synthetic materials that need replacing every 15โ€“20 years.
๐Ÿก
The Look of Maine
Cedar shingles are the defining material of the New England coast. They weather naturally to a beautiful silver-grey that no synthetic can replicate โ€” and they only look better with age.
๐ŸŒฒ
Locally Sourced
Maine Atlantic white cedar is harvested sustainably from the forests of Downeast Maine. Buying from Grandpa's Shingle Mill keeps the money local and the supply chain short.
โœ‹
Hand Cut Quality
Machine-cut shingles are consistent but impersonal. Hand-cut shingles are graded and selected individually โ€” every bundle reflects decades of expertise and genuine craftsmanship.
๐Ÿ”ง
Easy to Work With
Cedar is lightweight, easy to cut, and forgiving to install. Experienced contractors love it. Homeowners tackling their own projects appreciate that it doesn't require specialized tools.
